Extended log retention and historical analysis

Data needed for an incident investigation or review may fall outside the standard retention period. We design extended retention so access to historical data and associated costs are defined in advance.

Service scope

Extended log retention

We agree sources, retention periods, indexing and archiving. We distinguish readily searchable data from material requiring retrieval. Before implementation, we define capacity, permissions and expected archive-access time.

Retention scope and periods

We select sources and retention periods appropriate to operational needs and agreed organisational requirements.

Storage model

We define indexing, archiving and retrieval, considering volume and expected use.

Permissions and access

We agree recipients, retrieval request procedures, export scope and rules protecting information in logs.

Historical analysis

We prepare data for agreed historical queries and document limitations arising from source quality and continuity.

Project deliverables

What will your team receive?

  • A matrix of sources, volumes and retention periods.
  • An archiving and retrieval design.
  • Access, export and permission-control procedures.
  • Retrieval checks and agreed historical analysis results.

Delivery conditions

What do we agree before starting?

  • A source list and expected data volumes.
  • Agreed operational needs and retention requirements.
  • Available resources and agreements on licensing and archive costs.

How we work

From understanding the need to verifying the result.

Defining requirements

We establish the questions and periods the archive must support and how quickly data should become available.

Design and implementation

We configure the agreed storage, access and retrieval model.

Verifying usability

We check retrieval, sample completeness and the feasibility of intended analyses.

Clear responsibilities

What is already included, and what do we extend?

The core service includes agreed retention and standard access. Longer storage, greater volume or specialist historical analysis is an extension. Archiving does not mean unlimited analysis of arbitrary data.

Before making a decision

Questions about extended log retention

Will all archived logs be immediately searchable?

It depends on the storage model. Archived data may require retrieval; timing and rules are agreed before implementation.

Can data from before extended retention began be recovered?

Only if it remains in available sources or copies. Extending retention does not recreate previously deleted records.

Does longer retention alone satisfy compliance requirements?

It supports agreed evidence needs, but periods, data scope and other requirements must be defined within broader information governance.

The next step

Let us define a scope that makes sense for your organisation.

Let us discuss your environment, priorities and team responsibilities. We will use this to define the work, required access and service conditions.
