Advanced Observability — application instrumentation and diagnostics
When an application slows down, server utilisation charts alone may not explain why. We extend telemetry for selected components to connect the symptom with a processing stage and support the choice of an appropriate fix.
Service scope
Advanced Observability
Instrumentation provides additional application data: metrics, logs and request traces. We analyse dependencies between the application, database, infrastructure and external integrations. The scope is tailored to code access, technological capabilities and the questions the diagnostics need to answer.
Telemetry plan
We select relevant operations, dependencies and measurement points to collect data that addresses specific diagnostic problems.
Component instrumentation
We prepare agreed additional metrics, logs and request tracing, defining the application team’s required involvement.
Dependency analysis
We examine where delays or errors arise and how they propagate between the application, database and external services.
Verifying conclusions
We compare observations with application configuration and changes, and define the measurements needed to assess remediation effectiveness.
Project deliverables
What will your team receive?
- Instrumentation plan and description of available measurement points.
- Metrics, log and dependency views for the application under investigation.
- Diagnostic report with verified observations.
- Change recommendations and criteria for subsequent verification.
Delivery conditions
What do we agree before starting?
- Access to architecture documentation and application owners.
- Ability to make agreed changes or configure telemetry.
- Agreed data scope, retention and protection of information in logs.
How we work
From understanding the need to verifying the result.
Define the problem
We describe the symptom, the process under investigation and the information needed to identify the source of the problem.
Extend visibility
We implement agreed telemetry and verify its accuracy and impact on application operation.
Diagnose and recommend
We analyse collected data, document findings and agree how to verify recommended changes.
Clear responsibilities
What is already included, and what do we extend?
Receiving available application data through standard integrations is part of core monitoring. Instrumentation changes, any code work and a specialist diagnostic project are extensions. Responsibility for fixing application defects must be agreed.
Before making a decision
Questions about Advanced Observability
Is source code access required?
It depends on the technology and planned instrumentation. Some data can be obtained through configuration; other data requires involvement from the application development team.
Does the service include fixing application code?
The core deliverables are agreed telemetry and a diagnosis. The scope of code changes, the responsible team and acceptance arrangements are agreed separately.
How do you limit the collection of sensitive data?
During design, we define the required fields, how to minimise them and the access and retention rules. Telemetry should serve the purpose of the analysis.
