Synthetic Monitoring — business process monitoring

An available server does not necessarily mean that users can complete an important task. We create controlled scenarios that test each step of a service and identify where problems arise.

Service scope

Synthetic Monitoring

A synthetic test reproduces an agreed journey, such as signing in, searching for information and submitting a test form. We define the expected result, test data and permitted effects. Results are connected to SOC/NOC oversight to help assess the impact of a failure on the business process.

Selecting user journeys

We agree the most important processes and the stages not covered by simple availability checks.

Scenarios and test data

We prepare the steps, accounts and data needed for controlled execution without unapproved actions in production processes.

Assessing results

We define success conditions, error indicators and how to distinguish a service issue from an outdated test scenario.

Reporting and escalation

We present stage results and their connection to the service, identifying the ticket recipient and necessary diagnostic context.

Project deliverables

What will your team receive?

  • Map of monitored journeys and success criteria.
  • Set of implemented synthetic scenarios.
  • Results views and alerting rules.
  • Instructions for updating tests after application changes.

Delivery conditions

What do we agree before starting?

  • A process owner and a description of the correct sequence of actions.
  • Test accounts and data with agreed permissions.
  • Rules for test execution and cleanup.

How we work

From understanding the need to verifying the result.

Describe the scenario

We select the journey, success criteria and permitted testing method.

Build and check

We prepare the test, verify results and check behaviour when a selected step fails.

Integrate with monitoring

We activate the agreed schedule, escalation path and update process aligned with application changes.

Clear responsibilities

What is already included, and what do we extend?

Core Monitoring and plans using its capabilities include response checks and basic functional tests for designated services. Multi-step business scenarios are extensions. Engineer response to an outage depends on the NOC or Enterprise scope.

Before making a decision

Questions about Synthetic Monitoring

Can a test perform real transactions?

The scenario and its effects must be explicitly agreed. The preferred approach uses appropriate test data and accounts, with a controlled way to complete the action.

Does every application design change require a test update?

Not every change, but changes to elements used in the scenario may disrupt the test. We therefore agree release notification and test verification procedures.

How does this differ from website monitoring?

A basic check can confirm that a page responds. A synthetic scenario verifies whether specific steps produce the expected result from the user’s perspective.

The next step

Let us define a scope that makes sense for your organisation.

Let us discuss your environment, priorities and team responsibilities. We will use this to define the work, required access and service conditions.
